ECI – Early Contractor Involvement

Approach

The concept of ECI came about following Sir John Egan’s report in 1998, which sought to improve the performance of the construction industry. The ultimate goal was increased efficiency for both clients and contractors. The provision of ECI input is invaluable to improve efficiency and realise real cost savings and sustainability benefits. Introducing ECI at an early stage will realise the maximum benefits for a scheme or programme of works. It is however unlikely that an ECI contractor will be appointed before a preliminary design is completed and this will limit the changes that can be made. John is able to utilise his construction and delivery experience to bring ECI to the concept stage of a project thus optimising cost and carbon savings.

Benefits

  • Improved safety during construction
  • Buildable solutions that minimise the impact on customers / users
  • Reduced risk
  • Realistic timescales
  • Cost certainty
  • Benefits are realised by the client and not shared
  • Innovative materials and techniques adopted
  • Reduced programme

Experience and Evidence

John has worked on ECI contracts whilst working with AMEC as a contractor and Mott MacDonald leading design teams, providing key support to the projects in this area. John has provided construction methodology, programme and alternative solutions to a variety of projects fulfilling the ECI role. These include the Crossrail depots, Manchester 2nd City Crossing, Queensferry Crossing, M18 J5, Nottingham Tram Extension and the Eastern RIS1 package for Highways England to name but a few.
